Start of 2017 - ITF 15k Futures in Turkey
After a good training block over Christmas I set off to play two futures tournaments in Turkey. I travelled with fellow TeamBath-MCTA member Liam Broady and fellow Brit David Fox. Prior to Christmas I had a couple of tournaments again in Turkey where I struggled with the conditions, and I wasn't sure how I felt about returning to those same conditions just a few weeks later. However, I think it's always good to get back to places and remove those negative memories. I did just that, in my first week in Turkey I got another world point in singles and made my first professional final in doubles partnering Liam. It seemed to rain all week which really interfered with the schedule. We didn’t play our final until the Wednesday of the following week !! The second week in turkey was a good experience, due to so many days being rained out we had to play the qualifying on red clay, which I hadn't play on in 5 years…. That being said I managed to grind my way through to the last round of qualies before falling to a higher ranked player.
You learn to be able to adapt in different situations, but the key to it all for me was through all the rain delays and the change of surfaces, not to let myself fall into the trap of complaining about the things going wrong. I could not control these factors.
I am now back in the UK with my singles ranking climbing up 400 places to 1567 and my doubles ranking being up 300 places to 1234. So all in all a very successful start to 2017 and I plan to continue working hard and control my input which will allow the output to take care of itself.
